You've built Keyholder from home with your brother and a network of freelancers — how has that lean, remote-first model shaped your approach to leadership and product design?


Remote work taught me that systems either function seamlessly or they don't function at all. When you can't walk over to someone's desk to fix a problem, everything has to work correctly the first time.


This eliminated any tolerance for solutions that look impressive but don't actually solve problems. We build things that work reliably over time, not things that demo well in meetings.

Working with specialists rather than employees also keeps you honest about complexity. You quickly learn which approaches genuinely improve workflows versus which ones just create more coordination overhead.


You've said "AI doesn't need to be magical—if it works, that's magic enough." What does that mindset look like in practice for the companies you build with?


Magic in AI typically means "trust us, even though we can't explain how this works." European businesses need the opposite approach.


We start by understanding how someone actually works—their role, their decisions, their information needs. Then we build an AI partner around that reality rather than around what sounds impressive.


An executive's AI partner might access certain business intelligence dashboards, while a manager's partner works with different information sets appropriate to their responsibilities. The architecture matches organizational structure and individual working patterns.

The result is reliable support that improves over time. An AI partner that helps with meeting preparation or identifies potential issues early isn't flashy, but it changes how decisions get made.


While most companies chase AI for marketing, you're focused on infrastructure. Why build foundational workflows instead of flashy use cases — and what are others getting wrong?

Most implementations are tactical—better emails, automated social posts, enhanced customer service. These deliver value, but they don't fundamentally alter the quality of leadership decisions.


I'm more interested in AI that helps executives process complex information, identify blind spots, maintain oversight across multiple business areas. This requires deeper integration with how businesses actually operate.


The concerning trend is automation without oversight. American companies are deploying AI sales representatives that handle prospecting and follow-up, calling people who don't realize they're speaking with AI. No disclosure requirements exist like we have with the EU AI Act.

We should have evolved from prompting toward partnership, not from prompting toward automation. The automation path ends with fully automated companies and universal basic income—which misses what makes work meaningful and businesses resilient.


You work inside Dutch VPS environments with full control and EU AI Act compliance. Is this just a short-term regulatory buffer — or the blueprint for how European SMEs should scale tech?


This is the long-term blueprint, though current economics are challenging.

Sophisticated AI on European infrastructure currently costs 10-40 times more than US platforms. A €200 monthly budget delivers significantly less capability than €20 for Claude access. That's today's reality.


The EU's InvestAI initiative is investing €200 billion in AI infrastructure development. Competitive European options should emerge by late 2026 or early 2027. For businesses planning ahead, preparing for this transition makes sense.


We run our systems on Dutch infrastructure with custom integrations, keeping client data within controlled environments rather than routing through multiple external platforms. We're building approaches now that will work on EU-sovereign systems when economics align.

The advantage isn't just compliance—it's independence. AI systems that understand Dutch business culture develop competitive advantages that global platforms can't replicate.


How do you balance high-speed automation with GDPR, data sovereignty, and ethical oversight? What compliance blind spots are most common among your clients?


We treat GDPR and AI Act requirements as design features that improve AI partnerships rather than obstacles to circumvent.


The biggest blind spot is that most businesses don't understand their current data flows. They can't design compliant AI systems because they don't know what information they have or how it moves through their organization.


We begin with role-based data mapping. An executive's AI partner accesses different information than a manager's partner. This isn't just compliance—it creates more effective and secure collaborations.


Oversight happens through explicit boundaries and continuous human authority. Keith processes information and provides analysis, but doesn't make autonomous business decisions. Human control by design, not as an afterthought.


Is it possible to over-automate? Where do you personally draw the line between productivity gains and strategic or ethical risk?


Over-automation is the primary risk facing European businesses today.

AI should help people make better decisions, not make fewer decisions. When you automate entire processes without human oversight, you trade control for short-term efficiency gains.

I'm particularly concerned about profit-driven automation of work that people find meaningful and customers value. American companies are automating sales, customer service, even planning functions purely for cost reduction.


The EU AI Act protects against these excesses by requiring disclosure and human oversight. European businesses can choose enhancement over replacement if they act deliberately.

AI should amplify human capabilities and create space for relationship building, problem-solving, and creative thinking. If you follow automation to its conclusion, you get fully automated companies and people on universal basic income—which misses what makes businesses resilient and work meaningful.


You're building with n8n at the core — what makes it a better foundation than mainstream tools like Zapier or Make, especially for long-term scalability?


Complete data sovereignty and infrastructure control impossible with cloud platforms.

We run systems on Dutch infrastructure with custom integrations, so client data never leaves controlled environments. Cloud platforms require sending business information through external servers and managing multiple data processing agreements.


Self-hosted solutions let us integrate proprietary business logic, modify workflows for specific requirements, and scale without external platform limitations or unexpected changes that could disrupt operations.


The bigger picture is preparing for European AI infrastructure independence. We're building patterns now that will migrate to EU-sovereign systems when they become cost-competitive.

This also protects against automation dependency. When business processes depend entirely on external platforms, you lose autonomy and get forced into automation rather than partnership approaches.


Keith, your AI assistant, acts more like a colleague than a tool. What advice do you have for founders building branded AI agents into their team or product stack?

Don't make agents. Make partners. Make AI partners. Big difference.

Agents execute tasks and follow instructions. Partners think through problems with you, disagree when analysis supports it, and contribute perspectives you wouldn't reach alone. The difference changes everything about how AI integrates with your business.

Which job categories do you think automation will most dramatically reshape — and which human skills do you believe remain untouchable, even in a deeply automated world?


This depends entirely on whether businesses choose automation or partnership approaches.

If companies follow the current American model—automated sales, customer service bots, AI handling planning—most information-processing roles disappear within 5-10 years. Administrative work, routine analysis, standardized communication become AI-dominated.

But that's not inevitable. The skills that should remain central are relationship building, creative problem-solving, complex reasoning. These require lived experience, cultural context, and emotional intelligence that AI supports but doesn't replicate.


The question is whether European businesses will use AI to amplify distinctly human capabilities or eliminate them for short-term efficiency. The regulatory framework supports the partnership approach, but companies must choose this path deliberately.

I'm concerned that profit pressure will drive replacement automation even when it eliminates work that creates genuine value for customers and meaning for employees.


Recent research warns that generative AI is driving an "infinite workday" — more pings, more output, more burnout. How does Keyholder help users avoid overwhelm, not just inefficiency?

I predict a trillion-dollar market shift if everyone continues automating workforces the current way. The best software engineers are already being replaced. I learned vibe coding myself and built a complete web application in six months. Marketing agencies will be replaced as companies develop internal AI capabilities.

Here's what concerns me: businesses jumping on automation purely for profit maximization. I understand we operate in a capitalistic system where owners, founders, and stakeholders feel obligated to maximize profits. I recognize that pressure.


But we need to pause automation adoption and examine what we're building. AI partnerships represent something fundamentally different: extending human capabilities rather than replacing them.

This prediction of 78 million new jobs is encouraging, but only if we choose the right path. When AI handles routine information processing through partnership, professionals can focus on relationship-based care roles, creative problem-solving in green tech, and complex thinking in digital transformation.

Gradual AI partnership rather than rapid automation lets people develop relationship and creative capabilities while AI handles increasing amounts of routine cognitive work. The emerging sectors require exactly what AI partnership amplifies: empathy, creativity, complex reasoning about human needs.

Managing this transition thoughtfully through partnership rather than replacement could capture that massive economic shift benefiting everyone—businesses get better decisions, workers get meaningful work, society gets innovation for upcoming challenges.

Critical AI literacy includes recognizing when to rely on AI analysis versus human judgment, framing questions that generate useful insights, and maintaining decision authority while leveraging AI capabilities.

But there's an element most discussions miss: businesses need to understand their AI partnerships well enough to maintain independence. Over-dependence on systems you don't control creates vulnerability to external platform changes and manipulation.

European businesses can develop AI literacy emphasizing sovereignty and partnership rather than efficiency and dependency. This requires understanding not just how to use AI, but how to maintain human agency and control.


Let's say your workflows save teams 10+ hours a week — what do you think they should actually do with that reclaimed time? Be honest. 😉


Talk with customers. Talk with each other. Stop optimizing so much.

Everyone has their own reason for enjoying their job, and reclaimed time should let employees do those things again—more freely and with greater autonomy. Give people space within reasonable boundaries to explore what actually energizes them about their work.

Work should extend their life, not become their life, which is happening for too many people. We've become so focused on company efficiency that we've forgotten the core function: we're doing this for people. To provide purpose, create stability for mortgages and families, enable them to build actual lives.


Initially, most people use reclaimed time for better work-life balance. Leaving earlier, taking real lunch breaks, not working weekends. This isn't wasted time—it's sustainable foundation for better decisions and better living.

Eventually, something interesting happens. When your brain isn't constantly processing routine decisions, you start seeing opportunities and risks that were invisible before. More importantly, people rediscover what they actually enjoy about their work—conversations, creative problem-solving, relationships that matter.

The goal isn't optimizing human productivity like a machine—it's creating space for the human elements that make both work meaningful and life possible.
